Toshiba’s HD-DVD High Definition Format
Guides
HD-DVD was created as the alternative to Blu-ray as one of the alternate next-generation format for home viewing of movies.
HD-DVD as a format for watching movies is now a dead format (it won't be supported in future by it's creator Toshiba) and like Laser disks (for video) and SACD and DVD-Audio (for audio) it will soon be a dead-end technology for High Definition Video.
HD-DVD will continue as a storage mechanism for PCs though, and as prices are currently far lower than Blu-ray (for both blank discs and high capacity drives for use in PCs) it may become the PC format for data backup
Instead of HD-DVD we'd recommend that you look at Blu-ray as has become the winning successor to DVD with far improved sound and video playback capabilities when used with compatible High Definition.
